IMS is looking for an experienced artificial intelligence adviser for the cross-cutting Journalism Hub to support our media partners and programming globally. Who are we? IMS (International Media Support) supports local independent media and media advocacy groups in countries affected by conflict, political transition and authoritarian rule. Established in 2001, the organisation has since worked with hundreds of local and international partners to support independent journalism, freedom of expression and the safety of journalists. IMS pushes for quality journalism, challenges repressive laws and keeps media workers of all genders safe, so that they can do their jobs. Through alliances and innovation, we help free, independent media contribute to positive change and better societies. IMS’ goal is to have public interest media that is relevant to and reaches audiences of all groups of society, so that they can discuss, share and act on this content, and to have media and civic groups and organisations – especially women’s and minority organisations – collaborate to bring about this change. In addition, IMS supports the development of inclusive workspaces, free from discrimination and harassment, through inclusive and transformative policies and mechanisms. Job summary IMS is seeking a dedicated and experienced artificial intelligence adviser to join our dynamic and inclusive team in the Journalism Hub, a cross cutting unit which seeks to connect the knowledge from across the organisation. As an adviser, you will assist all four of our departments – from Global Response and Europe, Asia, Africa and MENA, by connecting knowledge on artificial intelligence in newsrooms. Your primary tasks will be to carry out Capacity building expertise Project implementation Research and communication The aim of the role is to support our media partners and our programme teams to better navigate this fast-paced developments. We want to better support our partners to harness the opportunities and mitigate risks, contributing to evidence-based thought-leadership in this field. You will assist with: – Coordination and sharpening of what IMS can offer in this field based on the needs of our strategic media partners and programme teams – Support programmes to develop strategies on AI intervention at regional levels – Sharpen IMS understanding on how newsrooms can use AI to do more with less – Sharpen IMS understanding on how media can use AI for eg. to reach marginalized audiences, text to audio in marginalised languages, countering disinformation with AI – Develop AI guidelines for media – Continue to support AI experimentation – Maintain latest developments in tools and plugins that could benefit our partners. In this role you will be expected to connect on knowledge exchange with other advisers within IMS’ Journalism Hub (JHub). JHub is IMS’ knowledge and facilitation hub that enables IMS to strengthen partner effectiveness in public interest journalism and media viability. JHub ties the expert knowledge in the organisation together. By following and scanning global trends, JHub is a nexus that keeps IMS abreast with global developments and improve IMS’ knowledge. It joins up thinking or identify cross overs and will focus on problem solving, getting feedback on issues and challenges, sharing things that have worked. Key functions and key responsibilities Capacity building expertise Coaching and mentoring IMS strategic partners on their use of artificial intelligence in newsrooms Identifying and connecting trends and opportunities in the development of artificial intelligence relevant to the contexts where IMS works and for specific use cases (such as new ways to reach marginalised audiences, local language models, AI assisted modalities for fact checking and outperforming disinformation) Maintain an up-to-date digital repository of artificial intelligence documents, resources and tools for IMS partners based on mapping real-world use cases Developing user friendly guides on best practices in line with IMS’ global strategy Project Implementation Contribute to project management and delivery Hosting webinars on topics related to artificial intelligence development including through presentations and responding to questions Assisting with managing and monitoring needs and impact assessments Extract learnings, reflections and reviews of selected media to feed into learning briefs and showcase outputs Contributing to fundraising to extend our artificial intelligence expertise Support programmes to develop strategies on AI intervention at regional levels Research and communication Representing IMS as a thought leader through analysis, position papers, evidence-based cases studies and reports to publishable standard Following and scanning global trends to inform IMS’ strategic intent and present these to relevant internal fora (board meetings, executive management) Maintain an up-to-date repository of artificial intelligence documents, resources and tools for IMS staff to maximise knowledge exchange across programmes Participate in team meetings and retreats from JHUB to ensure IMS knowledge transfer Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree or higher in a field relevant to the position Be available to work globally and online Fluency in English is required Proven, well-documented experience of providing artificial intelligence capacity building to media businesses and newsrooms Demonstrated experience using artificial intelligence over at least three years Ability to analyse, interpret and report on complex data Strong critical thinking and writing skills; excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Desired : Computer or data science experience Fluency in additional languages is considered an asset Duration and location Expected length of employment: The length of employment is from 1st of February 2025 – 30th of December 2025 (11 Months). Possibility of extension, pending fundraising. Place of employment: Remote – but must be available during normal CET work hours (09-16). Employment type: Part-time (estimated: 20 hr/wk).
